Belgium-based deSter is the world’s leading supplier of plastic utensils – cups, mugs, plates and cutlery - to the airline and in-flight industry worldwide. The company manufactures more food and drink containers and partners more airlines than any other company. However, the markets in which deSter operates are intensely competitive. To maintain its competitive edge, deSter needed to give customers greater choice and offer them the possibility of ordering plastic spoons in a larger range of quantities, from as few as 36 to as many as 500 or more in a package. To do this, the company required a new production and packaging line. Ambitious targets “We set ourselves ambitious goals with the new production and packaging line - a higher production capacity, lower cycle times, and a high degree of operator friendliness,” says Cis Woesterenborghs, deSter’s manufacturing engineer, responsible for production development. The new line is centered on a 140-ton injection molding machine that injects 144 spoons at a time in an 8.5-second cycle. Compared to existing comparable lines at the factory, it produces double the number of spoons in a shorter cycle time and has reduced packaging volume by 35 percent.
